Özet

This thesis comprises institution of the Imperial Observatory and its activities that is very important for the Ottoman history of science. The role played by this observatory which is built by the encouragement of European observatories in 1868 in the adoption of modern meteorology, astronomy and science of earthquake constitutes the basis of this research. After mentioning the concept of Observatory in classical period briefly, we emphasize the new practices of the institution which is a reflection of the Western science in Ottoman Empire. With the building of the Imperial Observatory officers were informed about the technical equipment. The Institution which carry out meteorological observation as well as astronomical and seismic studies with opportunities available also mentioned the importance of international area. Since its establishment, despite its problems and financial difficulties, the collapse of the institution which survived for many years, in 1909 and its re-established in 1911, the new building and equipment described in the thesis. The question what kind of a legacy the institution that survives today as Boğaziçi University Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute has inherited from the Ottoman Empire period is clarified.
