The technological advances emerged after the Industrial Revolution and rapid population growth have led to unconscious consumption of resources and energy and therefore biological environment, nature and vegetation have started to disappear and the human beings have faced a serious environmental problem. Particularly the majority of the consumption is carried out by construction sector. When the buildings forming a basis for the construction sector are regarded as the places where people meet their sheltering, living, working, entertainment and etc. needs, it is clear that these functions which are the basic activities in life pose a problem for the next generations. The mentioned needs are impossible to leave. Therefore, the need to make designs which respect the nature, people, environment and support the conscious resource and energy consumption have emerged. The increasing need for living spaces caused by rapid population growth has led to unconscious consumption of natural resources in construction works. Wrong choice of materials and the wrong determination of interior space organization have led to applications which decrease the user usage and comfort conditions and threaten the human health seriously. Many researches, environmental conferences, papers have been presented on this subject for many years. The studies revealed the truth that the existing balance of the ecosystem can reach the desired level again within the opportunities provided to human being by the ecosystem. In that case, human beings will be able to leave a livable environment for the next generations using the technology and new construction methods developed by human beings to protect the environment and not to degrade the ecosystem. Ecological design and sustainable architecture concepts are fully come into play at this point. Firstly, the sustainability in architecture must be fully understood. Sustainable design approach requires handling many criteria from the selection of materials to indoors organization. The effects of the environmental factors and climatic data are important in the design process of the building. Therefore, when designing especially in housing scale, the user's usage comfort conditions at the desired level will be provided by the right choice of sustainable materials, ensuring compatibility with climate and environmental conditions and the designs carried out within this framework. As a result, to adopt the sustainability perspective in all matters from the design to the construction and material selection processes will lead to the solution of the problems. In this study, first sustainable design is explained conceptually and criteria for the design are determined and the effect of the criteria on indoors is examined separately. Some suggestions for the planning process are presented depending on the sustainability design criteria to find the effect of the material usage on the structural design, to make the evaluations of the production, transport and installation of new materials according to these criteria and to have maximum efficiency with minimum consumption of some needs requiring energy used in place arrangement such as light, heat and ventilation. Moreover, some investigations depending on the sustainability design criteria are carried out in the pre-design and design processes. When the sustainable housing designs are examined according to the determined criteria, many common grounds are found with traditional houses. The examined samples show that sustainability is not a concept that people are not familiar with. The conservation of the existing raw material, prevention of the unconscious usage of resources, designing houses compatible with the topography and climatic conditions are the common features used in the planning criteria of traditional houses. When the traditional Turkish house is examined in terms of planning features, climate conditions, material selection, etc. it seems to have the today's sustainable design features and it is possible to present some suggestion offers for the houses which give particular importance to human health and comfort by making some minor changes in these features. So, the suggestions presented in this study which is carried out on the traditional houses can be an example for today's sustainable housing architecture. Bodrum is selected as the place for the proposals which will be presented. Bodrum is a place where there is an intense construction and tourism activities due to its historical and geographical features and it has the characteristics of traditional Bodrum houses. However, the characteristic features of the buildings have started to disappear because of rapid population growth, technological developments and unplanned construction. Although the law on protection has a deterrent effect, it is not possible to prevent the massacre of the natural one. However, a place which is convenient for the use of natural energy resources due to the geographical and climatic characteristics is also convenient for the user to have sustainable and respectful to the ecosystem. In this context, in this thesis study, the climatic, geographical and topographical characteristics of Bodrum are determined and the nature of the traditional Bodrum houses is examined. Some suggestions are presented for the new constructions depending on the evaluations carried out within the framework of the mentioned design criteria and the characteristic features of Bodrum which may be a model for the current modern structures are listed. In conclusion, the study shows that environmental pollution and excessive resource consumption will be prevented by choosing the right material in buildings according to the environmental and climatic factors. The materials which are long-lasting, renewable, do not contain hazardous chemicals and do not affect the human health and the environment in a negative way play an important role in ensuring the sustainability of the ecosystem. When the traditional Turkish house is analyzed in terms of the period in which it was designed, it seems to be the building where you can find the traditions, standards of judgment and which was designed by the sustainability approach according to the characteristics of the period in which it was designed. It will be provided to examine the traditional houses according to the sustainable design criteria when they are formed depending on the structural conditions of comfort and climatic characteristics. Accordingly, the relationship between the sustainable architecture and traditional architecture will be explained and some sustainable and rational solutions will be presented for the construction process of the selected region.Key Word: Sustainability, Traditional House, Traditional Bodrum Houses, Turkish House, Sustainability Design Criteria.
