This study has two aims. The first aim is to examine the effect of utility model law on economic growth. The second aim is to investigate the effect of utility model applications on firm revenues growth rate. System Generalized Moment Method (GMM) is used to test the hypotheses which are derived from these purposes. Sample of the macro panel data set of the study covers 35 developed and 54 developing countries for the 1996-2010 period. Sample of the macro panel data set of the study covers 80 firms registered in the İstanbul Stock Exchange for the 2003-2016 period. According to the results of the macro panel analysis; the effect of different types of intellectual property protection on economic growth varies with respect to the level of development of the countries. For example, patent rights protection affect economic growth positively in developed countries, while the utility model positively affects economic growth in developing countries. According to the results of the analysis of micro panel, the number of utility models and patents of the firms which operate in Turkey, it does not have any significant impact on the firms revenue growth rate. According to the empirical findings of the macro analysis, it can be argued that the utility model is the determinant of economic growth in developing countries, while patent rights are the determinant of economic growth in developed countries. Furthermore, based on the empirical finding that intellectual property right protection has no statistically significant effect on the firm revenue growth rate, it can be asserted that in Turkey there is not enough awareness on this topic and firms did not internalize these rights on national/international competition. In line with these claims, the need to redesign and implement corporate level and national level policies in order to increase usage of the intellectual property rights, in particular the patent and utility model, clearly show itself.
