In this study, it was aimed to examine the concept of the artist in 'Death in Venice', the work of the Nobel Prize-winning author Thomas Mann. The phenomenon of change that emerged with a trip to Italy by the elaborate author, quinquagenarian Gustav von Aschenbach, who was the protagonist of the novel, showed that the concept of the artist had to be reconsidered for the work in question, apparently influencing it from the very beginning until the end of the plot. The alienation factor that emerged with the differentiation of the Novel hero, the role of Tadzio for the artist both as aesthetic allegory and as an inspiration, as well as the role of Apollon and Dionysos, whose roots go back to the Ancient Greek Culture and the circumstance of being decadent developed depending on them, primarily, the concept of art and artist is taken chronological from the theoretical point of view. The work 'Death in Venice', which has a rich content in terms of mythological components, also has a characteristic that the concept of art and artist is fed by the concept of artist in terms of work, following the views of Plato and Aristotle, the great representatives of Ancient Greek Culture. Gustav von Aschenbach's strangeness has gained momentum following the alienation, with the help of mythological components. Many components such as Hermes, Styx, Kharon, Spinario, Kritobulos, Helios, Quadriga, Nymphees, Acheloos, Semele, Zeus, Eros, Echo, Narcissos, Persephone which constitute a 'legitimization' ground for the protagonist also influence the concept of the artist . In this work, not only from the Ancient Greek heritage but also from Kant, the most important thinker of the Enlightenment period, Nietzsche, whose influences in the novel are frequent, and the views of the currents and representatives reflecting the understanding of the different periods, the characteristics of the artist concept and even `Künstlerroman` .In order to bring the information of the mentioned change in accordance with the plan of the study and to bring the conclusions from the analytical point of view in the final chapter, together with the analysis method (Ger.Werkimmanent) which is used for objective and scientific methodological examination of the subject which the thesis study deals with the decadent problematic. In Death in Venice, the collapsing protagonist completes the change as a focal cause in the event chain. The artist's first alienation, not to fall in front of what he wants to legitimize the at beginning of the decline. In the name of what he desires, both his own self and his authorship activities collapse, and the writer's loss of life under the same collapse creates a tragic but predictable ending to the work.
