This study has analysed housing in Kano, Nigeria from both quantitative and qualitative angle of view considering the nature of housing planning, types of residential neighbourhoods, housing type and their condition. The study population was derived from six residential neighbourhoods which were chosen from three different residential zones in the Kano metropolitan area. The study set out to ascertain resident's responses and perceptions on the quality and adequacy of their housing and neighbourhood's attributes. The data for this study were collected from both primary and secondary sources. The primary data were collected using a structured questionnaire administered to each of the systematically selected household heads in the six neighbourhoods in the metropolitan area of Kano. Data analysis was based on responses from 534 questionnaires retrieved from the six selected neighbourhoods and the data derived from the questionnaires was analyzed on Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS). The study found that there are major differences in the way residents from the six neighbourhoods perceive adequacy of their house and neighbourhood. Residents in the low density zone expressed higher satisfaction with their housing and neighbourhood than those living in medium and high density zones. Therefore, improving the condition of housing and neighbourhood is important in raising the residents' standard of living. Based on these findings, we believe that, in order to raise the residents' level of satisfaction, the city administration should focus on providing better public infrastructure and services especially within the high density zone which has poor planning and conditions.
