The concept of `history` is one of the central concepts for tradition of Classical German Philosophy. Hegel who is seen as the peak point of this philosophical tradition, is one of the most important and influential figures for modern historical thought and philosophy of history. The last quarter of 18th century and first quarter of the 19th century in which Hegel lived was a transformation period in history in which there took place great changes both in the practical world and in intellectual and philosophical sphere. In this period of history academic researches is motivated by a philosophical attempt to understand and explain these changes –changes which showed modern world with its positive and negative side-. The subject of this thesis is the philosophy of history in Hegel. The philosophy of history as a philosophical area in the German-speaking world of philosophy emerged in the early 19th century. Our concept of the philosophy of history is based on this early period of the 19th century. Hegel was one of the most significant figures in that period who established the Philosophy of History as a philosophical area. Hegel's occupation with the philosophy of history is not limited to his Lectures On Philosopy of History (Vorlesungen über die Philosophie der Geschichte). On the contrary, his philosophical approach is erected on historical way of thinking, so that one may claim that all his works are absorbed by this method. In this thesis I focus on the concepts of freedom (Freiheit) and progress (Progress/Fortschritt) in Hegel's Philosopy of History. This two concepts are central concepts in Hegel's Philosophy of History. I took into account both historical context and practical examples when I dealt with these two conceps. I suggested that this approach is one of the best ways to present Hegel's approach as original as possible.

Bu tezin konusu Hegel'in tarih felsefesidir.
