SUMMARY This study is an effort to understand a process that has been going on since the 1960's in Western art in which the objective of art has been transformed from that of form to that of concept. To put in another way, at one time an aesthetic act was an inseparable part of an artist's inner voyages and experiences. Notwithstanding the purely visual reading of a delimited form, process and concept were one. The changing conceptualization of this aesthetic was an expression of process. One of the most important aspects of the formal expression of art to be transformed by the disciplines that emerged in the 1960's was the statement that process was invested with a quality that made it more important than result. Instead of disjoint, detached stances in the relationships between work of art artist and viewers, the direct link between witnessing a process and life itself and its comprehension was intended resulting in recreation through a process of development. That form cannot be conceived purely in terms of the current and the visible is implicit in the variety of the conceptual references that can be made to it. VIThe choice of artists included in this study was made on the basis of the periods and disciplines in which they abide; personal preferences were exercised from the standpoint of their relation ships with conceptualism. Seven artistic movements (Arte Povera, Conceptual Art, Fluxus, Happenings, Performance Art, Body Art, Land Art) in which the transition from form to concept has taken place were examined. These disciplines are considered not simply in terms of their existence as reactions to formalism but also from the standpoint of their questioning the accepted hypotheses of the disciplines that they have gone beyond. The transition from the existence of feeling to the existence of thought is a process of humanization in which I have endeavored to comprehend the artists and their art in terms of thought behavior, expression, and-especially-their own statements made during their own times in the process of their socialization. Taking as our starting point the fact that we are unable to attribute meaning to an artistic process that excludes experienced events and facts and is divorced from the visual history created by the intellectual structure of a period, this study is an effort to grasp that artistic process. In other words, the ability to make a good assessment of the present also entails an effort to witness the artistic process. vn.
