Özet

This study aims to compare and contrast Aristotle's and Alexander of Aphrodisias' conceptions of intellect (nous) that are advanced in the De Anima of the former and the De Anima and De Intellectu of the latter. The characteristics that Aristotle attributes to the intellect in his work De Anima Book 3 sections 4 and 5 correspond to conceptual contents in Alexander of Aphrodisias' works. For instance, although the intellect to which Aristotle attributes the qualities of being active and passive appears to leave the impression that he makes a differentiation between certain types of intellect, he doesn't make such a division in actuality, leaving the matter in vagueness. Rather, he in fact evaluates the stages of cognitive learning by way of explaining it in terms of philosophy of nature. It can thus be claimed that the tripartite classification of the intellect that Alexander of Aphrodisias makes in reference to Aristotle can in fact be said to be Alexander's own making. So considering philosophical literature by Ibn Sînâ and especially Ibn Rushd on intellect within Islamic philosophy and their references to Aristotle and Alexander of Aphrodisias, it proves to be significant to investigate the views of the ancient philosophers on the subject in terms of better understanding the nature of intellect in Islamic philosophical thought. Therefore, observing the conceptual development of nous, which is traced even further back in the past is essential to comprehend the theories of intellect in Islamic philosophy.

Bu çalışmanın amacı, Aristoteles'in De Anima isimli eseri ve Afrodisiaslı İskender'in De Anima ile De Intellectu isimli eserleri bağlamında akıl kavramına dair görüşlerini karşılaştırmalı olarak ele almaktır. Aristoteles'in aklın neliğine dair De Anima'nın III.
