Although we see the first examples in the 15. century, fantastic painting had became an independent genre in the early 19. century. It was a time that fantastic approach had influences not only on fine arts but also in literature, music and theater. In this unique era a lot of different developments had been experienced in scientific fields and the invention of photography was on the agenda. All of these advances had great effects on art field and as a result the artists had the opportunity to lead their own way.Sembolism was one of the movements which had upheld the fantastic genre and carry it up to the 20. century. The fantasists who had narrated their dreams and fantasies with a sembolic way at the previous century, had merged into a wider field and explored their subliminal world with the help of surrealism. Unlike other movements of the period, surrealism hadn?t rejected its past especially oneiric surrealism had claimed the fantastic painting with all its history and pioneers. This preservative manner had strengthened the existance of the movement in the 20. century and directed it to the new evolutions. By adding the realism to the fantastic manner, The School of Vienna Fantastic Realism which was found with the leadership of Ernst Fuchs had tried to give messages to the world through techniques and arguments of old masters. Fantastic realists had a great deal of effect on new generation fantasists especially with their accurate style and subject matter. The contemporary fantasists couldn?t be able to add much improvements to their acquisitions and traced the path of fantastic realists through their own fantasm.Throughout this long duration there have been two main components which all the fantastic painters were commited to. The first one was technical skill that they strongly were in need of to be able to make the viewer question the reality of their main subject and argument and the second one was the spatial effect which was the significant factor for the fantastic impression and the atmospher. The obsessive and sublime technique of the 15. century Flemish painters has always been a benefit which has to be gained for the fantasists who has the will to photograph their dreams. The spatial fiction of their compositions with all uncanny, extraordinary, mysterious and undefined impact is surely the key resource of fantastic.KEY WORDS: Fantastic Painting, Fantasists, Technique, Genre, Space.
