The subject of the dissertation is the Tafsir courses carried out by Ulûm-ı Âliye-i Dîniye that is opened within the Dar al Funun. My objective in this study is to go around the Tafsir education within the context of Dar al-Funun's Ulûm-ı Âliye-i Dîniye department and to investigate the influence of modernism on the education system through one of the primary fields in religious education, namely, the Tafsir courses. The scope of the dissertation is limited to the years between the opening and closure of the department of Ulumu-i Aliye Dîniye, that is 1900 to 1914. This period of time we have devoted this study corresponds to both the times of Abdulhamid II and a certain period of the Second Constitutional Era (Meşrutiyet). In this study, I have endeavoured to reach Dar al-Funun's instructions, syllabus, Tafsir course books, regulations and data on teachers through primary sources as far as possible. By analysing the information and documents I attained, I have made certain observations on the nature and quality of Tafsir courses.Because of the fact that Ulûm-ı Âliye-i Dîniye was a department within Dar al-Funun, it might be thought that it was an educational institution that aimed to give religious education in a modern or innovational style. In Dar al-Funun which was established by taking the European countries as a model, the targeted standards were not achieved due to certain factors such as the political turmoil, insufficiency in the teaching stuff, the opportunity restriction and the imperfections within the elementary and secondary education. Even though certain arrangements were planned in the wake of assemblies held in the Faculty of Literature after the Second Constitutional Era, these arrangements were not accepted because of financial reasons.

Tez konumuz, Tanzimat sonrasında kurulan ve Dârülfünûn bünyesinde açılan Ulûm-ı Âliye-i Dîniye Şûbesi'ndeki Tefsir dersleridir. II.
