The study is consisted of six main chapters and the first chapter is written as an introduction. The second chapter is composed on the contents, origin and the concept of sustainability. Various sustainability approaches which appeared from past to the present and influenced the 20th century are specified and the fundamentals of the contemporary definition of sustainability are defined. The relations between the principles of sustainability and the natural source crises and overpopulation are presented with the reports, declarations and the decisions of the most important global sustainability conferences, assemblies and commisions. In the third chapter, the link between design and sustainability is analyzed, followed by an evaluation of various traditional design methods developed throughout the history and their sustainable solutions for a more comfortable, indigenous and economically prosperous life. The chapter proceeds on the definitions of advanced sciences and technologies, studying on and developing new sustainable materials, techniques and methods. The last part of the chapter consists of the presentation of the main sustainability standards and certification systems in the world, formulated to guide the architects, engineers and customers.Throughout the fourth chapter the elements of interior and furniture design that are susceptible to be reformed and improved by the principles of sustainability are examined. These elements are categorized as maintenance, cleaning, health, air conditioning, ventilation, materials, recycling, lighting, insulation and energy and are studied in the context of their basic features, the minimum standards required to create a healthy and comfortable environment and the new technologies and innovations for their sustainability attributes. The fifth chapter is consisted of the analyzes of four different buildings, which are presented with internationally acknowledged sustainability certificates. The conclusion of the study is based on the interpretations concerning the effects of sustainability on the future of the interior and furniture design approaches and methods.
