The concepts of causality, necessity and chance are closely interwoven both in philosophical and in scientifical analyses. These concepts are made topics of detailed scrutiny by philosophers of different ages, notably by Aristotele, Hume, Kant and N. Hartmann. First part of this study tries to investigate their views on general lines. Among the natural sciences physics and biology have made immense contributions towards a clear definition of chance and necessity and thereby to causation by analysing newly discovered facts and processes. Contemporary physics worked and works on random occurences and on the designs of chaos, and biology has put forward the concept of pure chance. These are still subjects of recent theoretical discussions. They make up the second part of this study. The problem was first handled systematically by Aristotle. He established four basic causes: the material, the efficient, the formal and the final. Our study is concerned with the efficient cause which is causality proper. In the Age of Reason (The New Age) scientific discoveries led philosophy to reconsider the mentioned concepts and many others such as substance, matter, spontaneity, determinism, finality and wholeness or unity. The first philosopher to attack the apriorism in the idea of necessary connection in causation was Hume. He undermined the foundations of the concept of natural law and reduced it to intersubjective habit, which however was, in his opinion, in conformity to nature. Kant accepted Hume's view to the point where empirical knowledge extends, but he went further to show that these concepts are originally in the mind of the knower and that the knower above the empirical subject, the transcendental subject, dictates laws to nature. Kant's attempt brought the functional (epistemological, gnosiological) view forward in contrast to an ontological point of departure.IV Nicolai Hartmannn reversed the Kantian trend by his New Ontology and re-established ontology as the fundamental discipline. The human being, he argued, is not merely a gnosiological subject; he has many connections as a Being among Beings. Knowledge is only one of these connections and an ontology of knowledge is necessary to put it to its proper place. The modes of being - possibility, reality and necessity- must be reviewed ontologically. The categories of being and of knowledge do not coincide but intersect. Necessary, a priori knowledge is to be found in the partial common area of this intersection. The view defended in this thesis is: Epistemological and ontological approaches to the problem have both firm grounds. To conceive causality both as a natural necessity and as a process having an element of chance is not contradictory. Progress in science has shown that the subjective frame of reference is indispensable and is formed by the objective counterpart which exists independently from being known or unknown. Determinism and indeterminism are both valid in different regions of reality and are to be conceived as aspects of a whole.
