The ancient city of Aigai, nowadays known as Köseler Kalesi or Nemrut Kalesi, is located on the Gün Dağı mountain at Köseler village, seventeen kilometers east of Yeni Şakran. Since 2004 systematic excavations have been carried out at Aigai under the direction of Prof. Dr. Ersin Doğer. The excavations have yielded architectural remains of the Byzantine era and related groups of small finds which mainly have been retrieved at the church in the Demirkapı sector, southeast of the Bouleuterion, cistern no. 2 north of the Agora and cistern no. 1 on the Acropolis plateau. Most of the Byzantine ceramic finds that are subject to this study have been found in the cisterns nos. 1 and 2 which have apparently been in use from the Hellenistic Period until the Late Byzantine era. A total of 374 ceramic finds from Aigai have been cataloged and evaluated. They have been examined as two main groups, the red and white clay groups and described by considering the type and color of clay, the typology of shapes, the characteristics of slip and glaze, the techniques of decoration and the repertoire of motives. Dating has been attempted by comparison to examples similar in form and decoration. Accordingly, the Red Lined Vessels (LRV) dating from the second half of the 4th to the end of the 6th century presumably are the earliest ceramics among the Aigai groups. The group of glazed ware includes Incised Sgrafitto Ware of Aegean type from the mid 12th to the first half of the 13th century, wares of the Family of Zeuxippus I – II type and groups of Slip-Painted Ware from the end of the 12th to the 13th century, Purple-Brown Stained Ware from the late 12th to the 13th century, Green and Orange Stained Ware from the 13th century and Green Stained ware from the second half of the 13th to the beginning of the 14th century (1300). The unglazed ware which is suggested to date to the 12th and 13th centuries is attributed to three groups such as Burnished Decorated Ware, Mica Dusted Ware and Unlined Ware. Clay analysis has not been carried out, but it can be concluded that the Red Lined Vessels were most likely produced in Phokaia, for the glazed ware Sardes and Pergamon are suggested as production centers and the unglazed vessels used in Aigai probably were made in local sites in the region.

Aigai antik kenti, günümüzde Yeni Şakran'ın on yedi kilometre doğusunda, Köseler Köyü-Gün Dağı üzerindeki konumuyla Köseler Kalesi, Nemrut Kale olarak bilinir.
