This study was conducted with the aim of determining the presence of parasitical contamination on dog hairs, as well as on soil and sand in parks and shorelines in Van region. 264 perianal and dorsal dog hair samples, taken from a total of 132 specimens consisting of 117 stray and 15 pets dogs were examinated. A total of 466 helminth eggs were found in 36 of sample dog hairs (27.27%). 20 of those hairs contained Toxocara sp. eggs (15.15%), while 16 had Taenia spp. eggs (12.12%), 7 had Toxoscaris leonina eggs (5.30%) and 3 had Dipylidium caninum eggs (2.27%). Dog hairs with Toxocara spp. eggs housed a total of 81 eggs, of which 20 were embryonated (24.70%) and 61 were non embryonated (75.30%). Of the 466 helminth eggs, 329 were found in perianal hairs (70.60%) while 137 were located in dorsal hairs (29.39%). Statistical analysis indicate that there are no correlation between parasitical contamination and sex, hair length or anatomical region of the hair sample, while revealing meaningfull correlation between contamination and stray/pet status, age groups and dog races (p<0.05). In order to investigate the soil contamination, a total of 190 soil and sand samples from 19 areas in the city of Van -which consist of 11 parks and 8 shorline zones Van Gölü- were examinated. Contamination with helminth eggs was detected in 7 of the 19 inspected areas (36.8%) and 17 of 190 samples (8.95%). 7.9% of the samples were contaminated with Toxocara spp., and 1.05% were contaminated with T. leonina eggs. None of the ascarid eggs were embryoned. Compared to sand samples, soil samples had more Toxocara sp. eggs and this variation was found to be statistically relevant (p<0.05). The difference between contamination levels of samples from parks and shorelines, on the other hand, was found to be statistically irrelevant. As a result, a higher number and concentration of eggs of potentially zoonotic helminth species have been encountered in dog hairs than in soil or sand, which leads to consideration of a higher risk of infection for humans coming into contact with dog hair than with soil.
