This study has been conducted with the aim of identifying the impact of the Confederation of Turkey Proyressire Trode Unions (DİSK) in Turkey's democratization process; an entity which has played a crucial role in the political, social and economic life of Turkey. During the completion of this study, I have made use of the archives of DİSK and those of newspapers, numerous articles and I have also carried out an interview with the former Secretary-General of DİSK, Mr. Mehmet Karaca. The Confederation of Proyressire Trode Unions (DİSK), which was founded in 1967, had always aspired to live up to its name and worked hard to ensure workers were given their constitutional rights in the workplaces where DİSK was involved. After the foundation of DİSK, there had been a conspicuous increase in the workers' movements in Turkey and such types of protests as sit-in strikes, boycotts and invasion of workplaces had become more common. Workers' resistance in the Kozlu-Üzülmez coal mines, invasion of workplaces in Derby and Demirdöküm are some of the significant events of the years 1968-1969. DİSK was able to attract attention with these activities and the Turkish government at the beginning of the 1970s wished to make changes in the laws concerning unions in order to lessen the power of this organization. DİSK had reacted to this incident vehemently which has come to be known as the June 15-16 Incidents in the history of laborers. Within the same time frame, with the 1971 military intervention against the rising social events, democracy was tarnished and the trade union movement had come to a halt. After the military intervention, until the CHP-MSP coalition in 1974, the pressure of the army was felt in every social sphere and the workers had lost some of their constitutional rights. After 1975, DİSK had fulfilled more massive and vocal actions. `Struggle for Democratic Rights and Freedoms`, `DGM protests`, `Anti-Fascism Protests`, `May 1 rallies`, `National Democratic Front (UDC)` activities initiated after the establishment of the `II. Nationalist Front` government and the efforts to create democracy meetings and democratic platforms against the 24 January decisions are some of the pivotal actions during that period. After 1975, the union movement became more politicized and the socialist left gates were opened. However, the disintegration that started on the left made itself felt at DİSK as well and during the Confederation's 6th Congress in 1977 a split took place and some trade unions were exported. This division in the confedaration, rising terrorist activities, the pressure of the ruling `Nationalist Front` governments, the incidents during May 1, 1977, the death of many workers and the martial law declarations had all made it difficult for DİSK to democratize itself. Following the military coup d'état on September, 12, 1980, the trial of the laborers had begun and DİSK was aimed to be politically neutralized. After the 1980 coup d'état, the new constitution significantly restrained trade union rights. However, the efforts made by DİSK for the sake of democratization over the years and the activities organized with laborers have created a significant backlog for the history of democracy in Turkey.

Bu çalışma, Türkiye'nin siyasal, sosyal, ekonomik yaşamında önemli bir yer tutmuş olan Türkiye Devrimci İşçi Sendikaları Konfederasyonu(DİSK)'nun, Türkiye'nin demokratikleşme sürecindeki yerini belirlemek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Çalışma sırasında DİSK Arşivi'nden, gazete arşivlerinden, makalelerden, kitaplardan yararlanılmış, DİSK'in eski genel sekreteri Mehmet Karaca'yla bir görüşme gerçekleştirilmiştir. 1967 yılında kurulan DİSK, adında yer alan devrim kavramına uygun hareket etmeye çalışmış, örgütlendiği işyerlerinde emekçilerin Anayasa'dan kaynaklanan haklarının kullanılması mücadelesini vermiştir. DİSK'in kurulmasının ardından işçi hareketlerinde belirgin bir artış yaşanmış; oturma eylemi, boykot, işyeri işgali gibi direniş biçimleri yaygınlık kazanmıştır. Kozlu-Üzülmez taşkömürü ocaklarındaki işçi direnişi, Derby ve Demirdöküm'deki işyeri işgalleri, 1968-1969 yılının önemli olaylarındandır. DİSK, bu faaliyetleriyle dikkatleri üzerine çekmiş, 1970'li yılların başında iktidar, DİSK'i etkisizleştirmek amacıyla Sendikalar Kanununda değişiklik yapmak istemiştir.
