Rapid urbanization has led to an influx of people into the cities and other urban areas mainly to seek for better life opportunities. The migration has however largely not been planned resulting into population explosions in the cities. Many middle and low-income families have therefore ended up living in informal settlements (slums) in the urban areas and cities while others become squatters. Nowhere is the problem of housing and human more pronounced like in the developing countries. However, the housing crises in these developing countries cannot only be attributed to the rural-urban migration as there are other factors that have played critical roles in making the situation dire. Some of the factors include: Failed government housing policies, poor housing financial systems, too much interference in the running of housing by the authorities, and complex land tenure systems among others. This thesis therefore seeks to identify the critical housing crisis issues, housing policy gaps in developing countries and propose policy measures that if adopted can help to address some of the housing challenges experienced in the developing countries. In the study conducted with a research method based on secondary data, it was seen that the policies, institutional and legal efforts putting forward in the solution of the housing problem in Nairobi did not produce the desired results due to both the institutional transformation process of the country and economic and human deficiencies.
