In this work, the syntaxonomy of Iğneada Floodplain Forests, their surroundings and thestructural properties of the plant communities were examined.Igneada region is on Black Sea coastal and located in the northwest part of Turkey. It isalso near the national border between Turkey and Bulgaria. It is in the A1 square, according to the Davis?s grid scheme. According to the Thornwaite climate system,Igneada region has a humid, mesotermal - oceanic climate. The geological structure ofthe region consists of holocene series. There are many kinds of vegetation types, whichare floodplain (longoze) forest, high forest with Quercus frainetto, Q. petraea, Q.cerris, Carpinus orientalis and Fraxinus ornus, lakes, swamps, scrub communities, sanddune and sea in Igneada. According to the ecosystem diversity, Igneada province is veryimportant. The releves were sampled, according to the Braun Blanquet method. The data wereelobarated using the numerical technigues and computer programs which are widelyused in phytosociologic and vegetation ecology studies in the World, especialy inEurope. Some of these analysis and programs were firstly used in phytosociologic andvegetation ecology studies in Turkey. The computer programs used in this work, todefine the plant communities and the relations between communities and someecological characteristics, are TURBOVEG, JUICE, SYN-TAX, PC-ORD andCANOCO.The data were put firstly in TURBOVEG, which was developed to store and arrange thereleves. Then the releves were transferred to JUICE which was adapted according toMicrosoft® Windows®. By this program, it is possible to arrange, classify and analyzethe large phytosociologic data and tables. It is also possible to make cluster analysis andclassify releves in PC-ORD directly by JUICE. Because of this, the releves were firstlyanalyzed in PC-ORD using Ward?s method, which is a Group Linkage method andEuclidian Distance. Beside this, the releves in JUICE were also transferred to SYNTAXby which both the ordination of releves, using Principal Coordinated Analyses(PcoA) and Euclidian Distance and the dendrograms, using UPGMA (Unweighted PairGroups using arithmetic averages) and Euclidian distance, were realized. In addition, the relations between plant communities and Ellenberg Indicator Values and also someecological properties were analyzed in CANOCO using Canonical CorrespondanceAnalyses (CCA)As a result of this process, six associations were identified in Igneada FloodplainForests and their surroundings. The syntaxonomy of these forest communities is givenbelow.QUERCO-FAGETEA Br.-Bl.&Vlieger 1937POPULETALA ALBAE Br.-Bl. On theother hand Trachystemo-Carpinetum both distributes on dry rivers around thefloodplain forests, which sometimes have water movement in winter, and on gentlysloping fields.According to the relation between forest communities and their Ellenberg IndicatorValues, it could be concluded that Leucojo-Fraxinetum, Carici-Fraxinetum andFraxino-Carpinetum have hygrophilous, Trachystemo-Carpinetum has mesophilous andTanaceto-Quercetum petraea and Quercetum frainetto-cerris have termophilous forestcharacters in a local scale. The most important factor affecting the vegetation structure of Igneada FloodplainForests is ground water. Some characteristic futures of the relation between floodplainforest communities and ground water are as follow;? Leucojo aestivi-Fraxinetum oxycarpae is a typical association, where groundwater level is the highest.? The ground water level of Carici remotae-Fraxinetum oxycarpae is lower thanLeucojo aestivi-Fraxinetum oxycarpae and higher than Fraxino-Carpinetum.The subasociations of Carici remotae- Fraxinetum oxycarpae have differentindicator values, in terms of ground water level. According to the ground waterlevel, their indicator values could be characterized as juglancetosum regii, typichum and quercetosum roburi, respectively.? The association, where the ground water level is the lowest, is Fraxinoangustifoli-Carpinetum betuli. The floristic composition of Igneada floodplain Forests is very similar to floodplainforest vegetation in Middle Europe and especially in Balkan. Indeed, when thedistribution of plants to phytogeographical region is taken into consideration, it could beseen that nearly half or more than half of the plants belong to Euro-Siberianphytogeographic region.According to the Raunkiaer?s growth forms, hemicriptophyts and phanerophyts aredominant in Igneada Floodplain Forests. Thus, it could be said that Igneada FloodplainForests have ?hemicripto-phanerophytic? vegetation structure.Fraxino-Carpinetum has the highest plant diversity, according to the Shannon-Wiewerdiversity index. This association is followed by Traschystemo-Carpinetum, Carici-Fraxinetum and Leucojo-Fraxinetum, respectively. It is notable that Leucojo-Fraxinetum has the longest, while Fraxino Carpinetum has the shortest flood period. Soit could be revealed that there is a reverse relation between the flood period and plantdiversity of forest communities. Increasing flood period causes unfavorable sitestructure, in terms of water conditions. So the number of plant species decreases at thiskind of sites.Floodplain forest communities usually have mixed, multi cohort and mature forest standstructure. The rich site, getting many tree species with different shade tolerance join tothe stand structure, is the main factor causing multi-cohort forests. Leucojo-Fraxinetum(%108,3) has the highest top layer crown closure. Trachystemo-Carpinetum (%99,43)and Fraxino-Carpinetum (%98,17) have nearly similar values to this community.Carici-Fraxinetum juglancetosum (%70,97), typichum (%88,04) and quercetosum(%71,3) have lower crown closure classes. Leucojo-Fraxinetum, which is generallyformatted by sprouts, has more individuals at the top layer than the other communities. It is followed by Trachystemo-Carpinetum, which is also formed by sprouts and Carici-Fraxinetum typichum. Fraxinus angustifolia is the main tree species mostly joining in tothe stand structure. In terms of floristic composition, Igneada thermophile forests show big similarities tooak forests in Middle Europe and Balkan, too. Nearly half or more than half of the plantspecies in Igneada thermophile forests belong to Euro-Siberian phytogeographic region.Thermophile forests have similar structure with floodplain forests in terms ofRaunkiaer?s growth forms. Hemicriptophyts and phanerophyts are dominant forms inthermophile forest vegetation. So, it could be said that Igneada Thermophile Forestshave ?hemicripto-phanerophytic? vegetation physiognomy.Although there is no any significant difference between thermophile forest communitiesin terms of Shannon-Wiewer diversity index, Tanacetum cinerii- Quercetum petraeahas the highest plant diversity. It is followed by, Quercetum frainetto-cerris typichumand Quercetum frainetto cerris carpinetosum, respectively. As Quercetum frainetto-cerris carpinetosum has two cohorts stand structure, otherthermophile communities form single cohort stand structure. Tanaceto- Quercetumpetraea has more individuals in the stand top layer than the other communities. Thetrees forming thermophile forests are mostly in the small diameter classes (less than20cm). The basal area per hectare increases, according to the increasing number of treesof larger diameter classes. The mean coverage degree of saplings in thermophile forestcommunities is higher in the scrub layer than herb layer. But the saplings in the scrublayer are mostly sprout oriented. In terms of some soil properties, such as clay, silt, organic material, salt, lime, pH andnitrogen, the soils of Igneada floodplain forests have higher values than the soils oftermophile forests. On the other hand thermophile forests grows on more sandy soilsthan floodplain forests. Although pH is lower than 7 in all plant communities inIgneada, thermophile forests grows on more acidic and less nutritious soils thanfloodplain forests.According to the elaboration of releves from sand dune vegetation, the closest belt tothe sea was defined as Ototntho-Leymetum association. The vegetation type behind thisassociation was classified as Medicago rigidula-Cionura erecta basal communitybelonging to Maresion nanae. As the distinguishing and character species of thiscommunity couldn?t be determined, it couldn?t be also defined in a association level.Due to this, the system of Kopecky and Henjy (1974), which was developed for thesame kind of situations, was used to entitle this vegetation type. The syntaxonomy ofsand dune vegetation is given below.AMOPHILLETEA Br.-Bl. Paliurus spina- christi communityJuncus maritimus communityJuncus littoralis communityIn terms of floristic composition, Igneada sand dune vegetation has significantsimilarities with Greece and Bulgarian sand dune vegetation. But it couldn?t be possibleto encounter with its plant communities in these countries. There are more than 140plant species on the Igneada sand dune vegetation. Most of them are psammophyt.Contrary to forest communities, the intensity of the species belonging to Mediterraneanphytogeographic region is evident. Beside this It is also notable that the species, whichare either multi-area elements or have not been accepted as members of anyphytogeographic area yet reach to high propotional degree on sand dune vegetation.Except, the Phillyrea latifolia ?Paliurus spina-christi community, on the transition zonefrom sand dune to the floodplain forests and Juncus maritimus and Juncus littoraliscommunity on the transition zone to the swamps, the Mediterranean phytogeographicalregion are represented with higher proportion than Euro-Siberian phytogeographicregion in the sand dune plant communities,Hemicriptophyts and Therophyts are dominant growth forms in the sand dunevegetation. So the sand dune vegetation has therophyto-hemicriptophytic physiognomy. The plant communities of sand dune vegetation have different characteristics in terms ofEllenberg Indicator Values. As Otontho-Leymetum sabulosi indicates higher soilreaction, temperature and light than the others at local scale, Medicago rigidula-Cionura erecta basal community has more continental characteristics. On the otherhand, meadow behind the sand dune communities are formed by the plants indicatinghigher nutrition and soil humidityBecause the plant communities of lakes and swamps in Igneada were studied bySeçmen and Leblebici (1997), they were?nt studied in this study again. But the plantscollected from these fields are listed and introduced. 151 taxa and 107 genera belongingto 51 families were established. 2 taxa belong to pteridophyta while the others belong tospermatophyta. All of the spermatophyta are angiospermae.Igneada region is very rich in terms of biological diversity and especialy on ecosystemand plant species levels. But this richness exists on very sensible and fragile structure. While preparing the management plan of the region, this sensitivity must be taken intoaccount.
SYN ?
