ABSTRACTİNFLUENCE OF DIFFERENT TEACHING METHODS INPROFESSIONAL COURSES ON THE STUDENT SUCCESSKey Words : Laboratory method, Electricity Education, student success, memory level, teachercentered conventional teaching method. This study was conducted to determine the effects of teaching the vocational study courses,by utilizing the laboratory method on the student success and memory level in comparison toconventional methods of teaching that is centered on the instructor. This study which utilized anEquivalent Control group, and preliminary test-final test experiment pattern, was conducted in2004-2005 education year in the city of İstanbul, among 60 students from the 9th grades ofBeyoglu Technical High School and Industrial Occupation High School Electrical Departmentsand 1 electronics teacher. For the study, 1st semester subjects of the 9th grade electronic-technicalcourse were chosen and by random selection method 9/A class was selected to be the experimentgroup and 9/B class was selected as the control group. The control group was subjected toteacher centered conventional teaching methods, and the experiment group, in addition to thesaid methods implemented a different teaching method, namely laboratory method. Beforecommencing with the application and after its completion both of the groups were given thesame success test as the preliminary and final tests. During the implementation, four follow uptests were given after each course unit was completed. To assess the post-implementation impactof the method that is applied, on the memory level of the students, the memory tests that wereprepared in parallel with the final test were administered to the students, two months apart. Allthe tests that were given were multiple choice type and contained 25 questions. The datacompiled was analyzed and evaluated in SPSS package program under t-test and Two WayANOVA for mixed measures model. The results that are obtained from the analysis conducted were as follows: it was displayedthat in teaching the 9th grade electronic-technical course laboratory method proved to be moreeffective than teacher centered conventional teaching methods with respect to the studentsuccess and their memory levels. As proved by this study, it is foreseen that the laboratory method will be applied morewidely especially in teaching occupational courses and that valuable contributions can be madeto vocational training by utilizing this method.
