The Synthesis of Pre-Ceramic Polymer Polymethylsilsesquioxane and the Investigation of the Chemical and Engineering Properties of Silicon -Based Preceramic Polymethylsilsesquioxane- Polypropylene CompositesIn the first part of this master thesis, The aim was to synthesize poly (methylsilsesquioxane) (PMSQ) as a silicon based pre-ceramic, polymer with poly condensation method and examine the effects of synthesis parameters on efficiency and on dimension of the particles of the synthesized polymer. It was proved that synthesis was successful by using spectroscopic methods like solid-state 29Si-NMR, 13C-NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance), FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared), DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimeter), TGA (Thermo gravimetric Analyze), X-Ray Diffraction, SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope). The polymer also was characterized from its white color.In the second part of this dissertation, polypropylene (PP)/PMSQ blends were prepared. Some synergist material like tri-phenyl phosphate, magnesium hydroxide, zinc borate and red phosphorus were added to these composites to increase mechanical, thermal, flammability and morphological properties of polypropylene which is an extremely commercial polymer. Extruder and injection molding machine were used to prepare the blends. The prepared composites were characterized with mechanical tests like tensile and impact tests, thermal test which are DSC and TGA, flammability test that is LOI and morphological test like SEM.It was observed increasing values of elastic modulus and impact strength of the PP/PMSQ prepared composites. Flame retardancy values of the PP/PMSQ blends are higher than pure PP. 10PMSQ(1,5)/5RP/5Mg(OH)2 composite has the best value of LOI that is 22. Bu tez çalışmasının ilk bölümünde silikon bazlı bir pre-seramik polimer olan poli (metilsilseskuoksan) (PMSQ) polimerinin polikondenzasyon metodu ile sentezlenmesi ve sentez parametrelerinin verim ve tanecik boyutu üzerindeki etkisinin incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Yapılan sentez çalışmasında polimerin beyaz rengi ve katı 29Si- NMR,13C ?NMR (Nükleer Manyetik rezonanse), FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared), DSC (Diferansiyel Taramalı Kalorimetre), TGA (Termogravimetrik Analiz), X-Ray Difraktosu, ,SEM (Taramalı Elektron Mikroskobu) gibi spektroskopik yöntemler ile sentezin başarısı araştırılmıştır.İkinci kısımda ise polipropilen (PP) /silikon bazlı pre-seramik polimer karışımlarının hazırlanması ve bunun yanında trifenil fosfat, magnezyum hidroksit, çinko borat ve kırmızı fosfor gibi sinerjistler kullanılarak ticari bir polimer olan PP' in mekanik, termal ve yanıcılık özelliklerinin iyileştirilmesi amaçlanmıştır.Hazırlanan karışımlar için çift vidalı ekstuder ve enjeksiyonlu kalıplama yöntemleri kullanılmıştır. Hazırlanan bu karışımların mekanik özelliklerinin belirlenmesinde, çekme testleri ve darbe testleri, termal özelliklerinin belirlenmesinde, DSC ve TGA analiz yöntemleri, yanmaya karşı dirençlerinin belirlemesinde, LOI testi ve blend ve kompozitlerin morfolojisinin incelenmesi için SEM cihazı kullanılmıştır.Hazırlanan PP/PMSQ karışımlarının elastik modülü ve darbe dayanım değerlerinde artış gözlenmiştir. Ayrıca karışımların yanma direnci saf PP' in yanma direncine göre artmıştır. En yüksek LOI değerine 22 ile 10PMSQ(1.5)/5KF/5Mg(OH)2 kompoziti ile ulaşılmıştır.
