There is a serious deficiency in the studies on the existence of design principals in Ottoman architecture. Therefore, regarding the needs of studies to be done in this field, the subject of this thesis was decided to be a research on proportions with the aim of helping to eliminate part of the aforementioned deficiency. My study primarily aims to determine the existence of principals of proportion in Ottoman architecture. In addition, the effects of such factors as dimensional features, layout design, structure types, local influences, architects, the geometric form of the units of space and the interrelations of utilized architectural elements on the application of the proportional order, whose existence has been determined, have been researched. The scope of the study is the stoa units of the imperial külliye structures constructed during the reign of Bayezid II. For purposes of basing the analyses on a firmer ground, the stoa units of the following structures from earlier and later periods were researched with the same method and set for comparison: Edirne Üç Şerefeli, Şehzade Mehmed, Süleymaniye and Selimiye mosques. In the method of the study; stoa units, vertical lengths, measurements of width and depth were determined in detail. The proportional values in one and two dimensions were identified as well as volumetric foms on three dimensions were determined on the acquired data. The findings were supplemented by tables and illustrations as well as the utilized measurement and proportion values. In the conclusion; the stoa units have been classified according primarily to structural typology and secondarily to the proportional values found to be similar in all structure types analysed. The existence of three different orders in the dimensional interrelation of vertical lengths measured from the stoa base have been determined in the one-dimensional proportiona examination of the architectural elements of stoa units. The aforementioned proportional orders were determined according to the ratio of the absolute height of the coloumns, arches and domes in the stoae to the height of the stoa. The values determined by both absolute heights and heights measured from the base in the stoa units reveal a certain proportional order. In addition, it has been found in the proportion research carried out on one dimension that a proportional principal dependent on the absolute mass dimensions was applied in determining the total hight of a coloumn. In the research on two dimension values three different proportional orders distinct from the one dimensional ones were found. It reveals that not one but multiple proportional orders were applied separately in the dimensional interrelations of stoa units and the geometric forms in architectural elements. Another subject of the study was the volumetric examination of stoa spaces, which revealed that while generally square prismatic forms were applied, cubic forms were also in application. The observation of the proportional values found on the Bayezid II era structures on the earlier and later edifices taken for comparison supports the existence of normative proportional principals in general Ottoman architecture. This study exhibits the existence of a proportional order in Ottoman architecture applied in the construction of the stoae of Bayezid II era imperial külliyes with evidence.KEYWORDS: Tokat, Amasya, Edirne, İstanbul, Ottoman, Architecture, Külliye, stoa, proportion, Bâyezid II, Mimar Sinan.
