The main aim of this study is to examine the effect of the level of place attachment (house, building, neighborhood, district and city) of people living in different districts of Istanbul, on place identity and on the relation of people to other place identity groups. Based on the studies (Arkonaç, 1995; Bernardo and Palma-Oliveira, 2013a; Bernardo and Palma-Oliveira, 2016a; Puddifoot, 1997) that addressed place within the frame of the Social Identity Theory, the effect of place as a social category on group relations was examined. The study was conducted with 242 participants (161 women, 81 men) who are living in different districts of Istanbul and aged 17 to 65 years old. Socio-demographic Information Form, Place Attachment Scale, Place Satisfaction Scale, Place Identity Scale and Spatial Intergroup Relationship Scale were applied to all participants.According to the results, the participants are attached with the highest level to the house, followed by city, district, county and building, respectively. Attachment to the district and district satisfaction were found to be determinants of city attachment. Length of residence is a predictor for the process of district and city attachment and the district identity for the city identity, moreover it was found that Istanbul being the longest living province is an effective predictor. The partial mediating effect of city identity on the relationship between district attachment and district identity and the partial mediating effect of district identity on the relationship between city attachment and city identity have shown that an upper or a lower place identity has become evident and reinforcing the relationship between attachment and identity on certain conditions. It has been determined that the partial mediating effect of intergroup relations at the district level on the relationship between district attachment and district identity and the partial mediating effect of intergroup relations at the city level on relationship between city attachment and city identity. This finding shows that, in the framework of Social Identity Theory, when group relations are defined in place, place identity is strengthened at both identity levels.
