This dissertation is an analysis of two romances Boeve de Haumtone and its English counterpart Bevis of Hampton written in Anglo-Norman around the twelfth century and later adapted into English. Drawing on the postcolonial theoretical frame, the dissertation discusses the manifestations of the presence of `otherness` in the texts, and offer new readings of the romances as well as possible solutions to the difficult question of the East in the Middle Ages. This dissertation asserts that the complexity of the perception regarding the East in comparative contexts between romances has not yet been fully explored. This dissertation argues the construction of the East in literary, histographic and cartographic texts investigating how the medieval narratives do not distance the geopolitical and religious reality. This study considers how the idea of Roland's unforgettable rallying cry in Chanson de Roland, `Paien unt tort e crestiens unt dreit` loses its significance. While this dissertation argues that the crusades and trade are of importance to understand the complexities of the East-West interactions, it examines that Eastern territories have connections with the names such as Saboath and St George. This study aims to unveil another East by means of the female representations and the dissertation concludes that the `otherness` of the East is not encapsulated, for Western audiences, in the political and media discourse which labels certain parts of the East as `medieval`, meaning barbaric and retrograde.Key words: Medieval Romance, Middle English, Anglo-Norman, Boeve de Haumtone, Bevis of Hampton, the East.

Bu tez 12. Yüzyıl Anglo-Norman Boeve de Haumtone ve 14. Yüzyıl da İngilizceye uyarlanan Bevis of Hampton adlı ortaçağ romanslarında Doğu kavramını incelemektedir. Bu çalışma Edward Said'in Orientalism adlı eserinden yola çıkılarak ortaçağdaki edebi eserlerde ötekileştirilen Doğu'nun dışında başka bir Doğu olduğunu irdelemektedir.
