Sofar it was generally accepted that the Kushans were one of tribes known(£b the Chinese sources as Yiieh-chih who moved from their original homeland on the western borders of Kansu province of China under pressure of their northern neighbours, the Hsiung-nu, to the west from about 174 to 160 B. C. The Yiieh-chih are told that they had invaded West. Turkestan and that the Kushans were their descendent. But there are many reasons to doubt this information. According to Strabo (XI, 8, 2) the Asii, Pasiani, Tochari, Sacarauli and Sacai destructed the Graeco-Bactrian Kingdom and took Bactria about 145. B. C. And then according to the Chinese annals the territory of Bactria was divided among the five nomadic tribes so-called Hsiu-mi (located in Bedahshan / Fayzabad / Rustak), Shuang- mi (located in Kal'a-i Zal and its environment), Kuei-shuang / Kushan (located in Tepei-shah - Tahli-Sangin- Tahti-Kuwad), Hsi-tun (located in the vicinity of the city of Shahr-i Banu), and Tu-mi (located in either the Samangan province (between Tash- kurgan - Heybak according to the Islamic sources) probably or the city of Termez. The hsi-hou or yabgu of Kuei-shuang, Ch'iu-chiu-k'i, attacked and destroyed the other hsi-hous according to the Chinese sources. He originally named also `Kushan`, so the kingdom was called as Kuei-shuang / Kushan by the neighbour states. And then he invaded An-hsi (the Indo-Parth Kingdom of Gondophares) and took the country of Kao-fu (Kabul). He also destroyed P'u-t'iao / P'u - ta (located in the territory of ancient Pactues of Herodotus, between Gardez and Jalalabad) and Chi-pin (Gandhâra and Taxila), and completely subjugated them. He probably ruled between about 25 or 30 and 78 / 80 A. D. He also struck coins in the names of `Heraios`, Kujula Kadphises and `Soter Megas` and used to the name of Gushana and the titles Yavuga, Maharaja, Rajatırâja, Devaputra. To our opinion, the Kushans were originally Sakas, or one group from them. This appears from their coins, inscriptions so-called in `unknown language` found in Bactria which was the original nucleus and centre of the Kushan Kingdom, titles and probably their kurgans.

Şimdiye kadar Kusanların, komşuları Hsiung-nu'ların baskısı altında Çin'in Kansu eyaleti Batı sınırlarındaki asıl anavatanlarından tahminen M. Ö. 174 ilâ 160 yılında batıya hareket ettikleri genellikle kabul ediliyordu.
