Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is a common disease in our country (Turkey). It is autosomal recessive and characterized by recurrent self-limiting episodes of fever , peritonitis, pleuritis, and synovitis.FMF is a autoinflammatory disorder requiring lifelong treatment. In patients with chronic illness, the presence of mood disorders, such as depression and anxiety ,is frequent. It has been suggested in correlational studies that possible factors for depression include functional limitations,pro-inflamatory cytokines and other factors associated with having a chronic disease.FMF is characterized by recurrent episodes.Temperament characteristics can affectability of coping with helplessness due to the uncontrollable and progressive nature of the disease.Temperament characteristics of FMF patients hasnot been examined in previous studies. . The aim of this study to determine the most common dominant affective temperaments in patients with FMF and evaluate the frequency of depression and anxiety in FMF patients.Seventy three (73) patients with FMF and thirty (30) healty controls who were matched for sex and age and have no other systemic diseas were included in our study. In patients and healty control groups depression and anxiety were assesed with hospital anxiety depression scale (HADS) and The Turkish version of the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis,Paris and San Diego Auto Questionnaire scale was used to determine the dominant affective temperament. According to HAD scale prevelance of either anxiety or depression wasfound higher in FMF patients compared to healty controls (p=0,02 for anxiety,p=0,002 for depression).By using The Turkish version of the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis,Paris and San Diego Auto Questionnaire scale ,depressive temperament (%20,5) and anxious temperament (%20,5) were found as the most common dominant affective temperament in patients with FMF. Depressive temperament was found more frequent inFMF patients compared to healty controls (p=0,02).In conclusion,to the data of our study, either anxiety or depression are more common among FMF patients compared to healty subjects.Another important result of our study is depressive end anxious temperament are the most common dominant affective temperaments among FMF patients and depressive temperament is more frequent in FMF patients than healty subjects.
