Psychosocial effects of the social assistance are so important which should not be underestimated. Social assistance system as a whole has always been critically evaluated to have made individual feel worthless and lessened his self-esteem. The threat the individuals suffering from low self-esteem pose to the society cannot be ignored. Psychosocial effects of the social assistance as a social problem and more importantly the effect of it on self-esteem consist of the basic research questions of this PhD dissertation. That there is no scientific research on the issue is one of the most leading factors encouraging to conducting such a study. The dissertation is divided into three chapters. In the first chapter including a discussion on key concepts, there is an argument about ?self-esteem?, ?citizenship? and ?globalisation? besides the adjective ?social?. Second chapter introduces the emergence of the social assistance and its transformation over time. In this context three stages of social assistance which are ?conservative?, ?secular? and ?neo-liberal? have been referred, especially how these three different kinds of social assistance view the individual are considered in the chapter. In addition, the impact of globalisation process on social assistance and the transformation of the social assistance in this process in relation to IMF and WB policies are explained. The final chapter of the dissertation presents the findings of a fieldwork carried out to determine how the public social assistance mechanism run and whether these kinds of assistance have an impact on self-esteem of individual. During the fieldwork face to face interviews were carried out with 48 people including 30 of them in depth and semi-structured questionnaire containing questions related to the impacts of social assistance on individuals employed.
