Özet

Understanding the cities is of great significance in understanding the society that we live in and its problems. Even though it is people who shape and plan the city, cities also shape the people and the society. The phenomenon of urbanization is one of the key elements that form the societal and economic structure of a country. Having been the capital of various empires, Istanbul has a geo-politically and geo-strategically important location, like bridge interconnecting the Asian and the European continents. There are various analyses conducted on the evaluation of Istanbul's development and studies by historians, sociologists, geographers and urban scientists. This study endeavored to evaluate the economic, political, administrative, urban planning and sociocultural development of Istanbul between years 1923 to 1950. In this respect, the study, which uses literature analysis and content analysis methods, came to a conclusion that Istanbul transformed from a world city identity into national city throughout those years.
