The evaluation of the qualities of public open spaces which are the most important study area of the landscape architecture profession, in the post-occupancy process and on the basis of the opinions of users constitutes the subject of the study. To what extent the design projects prepared for the study area met the needs of users was investigated after the application in this study; user satisfaction was regarded as the main criterion in determining quality; and the methods of questionnaire, behavioral observations and interviews were used in the study starting from the theoretical perspective taking environment-behavior relations as the basis.Konak Square and its vicinity was considered to be suitable as the study area since it is an important public center for Izmir and there is a diversity of users and activities. In pursuit of the descriptive analysis of the area, face-to-face questionnaires were performed with 271 users and 56 specialists. The data of hourly temperature, humidity and wind strength were obtained on the days of the questionnaires and the bioclimatic comfort conditions were calculated in accordance with the Olgyay Method. With this data the relation between user satisfaction and bioclimatic comfort conditions was investigated. As a result of the preliminary observations in the study area, 9 subspaces were determined for the behavioral maps. Behavioral observations were performed on 7896 users between 09.00 and 11.55 and 14.00 and 16.55 for 9 days chosen between April 18 and May 15, 2006 in each subspace. Furthermore, during the observation days, photographs of the whole area were taken by a professional company at 08.30 in the morning, 13.00 at midday and 17.00 in the evening in order to document the distribution of users. In addition, the temperature, humidity and wind strength in the area concerning on the observation days was recorded on the commencement of each observation period. This information revealed the relationship between climatic data and user behavior. As a result of the research completed by the interviews with the design and application companies, the space performance of Konak Square and its vicinity was found successful by the user and specialist groups. The study area found that the square was able to gather people of different backgrounds and age groups and was most used for shopping, socio-cultural events, transiting to other places, short-term resting, meeting, gathering and eating and drinking. Contrary to what was expected, it was realized that the space was not active for 24 hours. It was observed that the habits and tendencies of the people of Izmir concerning the use of open space were demonstrated in the diversity of activities observed in the area and it was striking that almost no artistic activities were performed. The urban equipment elements in the study area were considered one by one in terms of their quality, sufficiency, functionality, type, comfort, durability and how well they were cared for. As a result of the evaluation, the urban equipment elements were generally found successful. It was observed that the natural elements were unable to fulfill their expected functions due to their not yet having fully grown and therefore it was determined that the space could not be reduced to human scale.By evaluating the quality of public open spaces in this study it was observed that many factors were effective in determining the space performance. It was concluded that the methods used in compiling the research would be appropriate in helping to guide the design of similar spaces and in other research in this area.Having scientific, social and economic value, this study was viewed to be beneficial for social scientists and those engaged in occupations involving the construction of physical spaces and who need to evaluate the interaction between human beings and their environment in space design. Keywords: Public Open Space, Post-Occupancy Evaluation, Izmir, Konak Square.

Yine gözlem gerçekleştirilen günlere ilişkin alanın sıcaklık, nem, rüzgar şiddeti, her gözlem periyodu başlangıcında kaydedilerek biyoklimatik konfor durumu sorgulanmış, böylelikle iklimsel verilerle kullanıcı davranışları arasındaki ilişki araştırılmıştır.
