The study consists of three sections. The first section is mainly about defense expenditure concept in general and thescale of defense expenditures in the world and in Turkey. In the second section, opinions and theories about the effect of defense expenditures on economic growthwere expressed. Also the past works in this field were presented with an extensiveliterature. Finally, in the third and last section, the relationship between defenseexpenditures and economic growth in Turkey was empirically tested. According toJohansen and Pesaran co-integration tests, the series were co-integrated. In otherwords, they act together in the long run. Also, according to Johansen test there is anegative relationship between the variables in the long run. According to errorcorrection model and Toda Yamamoto causality tests, the direction of causalitybetween the series was towards economic growth from defense expenditures.
