The aim of this study is to analyze the perceptions of Ataturk amongst Alewis, who in the course of interactions between the unique path of Alewi modernization and the direct and indirect effects of Turkey?s Kemalist modernization separated from their traditional context and got reconstructed within a new sense of Alawism today. It also seeks to look at the ways in which these perceptions correspond to the historical experiences of Alewis during the Ataturk period and understand the elements that contribute to the formation of such Ataturk perceptions of Alewi subjects that get constructed within the modern Alewi identity. In the first section, strategies of Turkish modernization; positivist, nationalist and secularist structures and practices of Kemalism; the indoctrination processes of the Republican regime to produce Kemalist citizens that embrace its own values; and the perceptions of Ataturk that form as a result of these indoctrination processes are presented. In the second section, the historical roots, theological structure, institutions, rules and the sociological structures of Alawism are explained in relation to the perceptions of Alewis amongst Kemalists and the effects of Kemalist secularizing and civilizing practices to the Alewis, in order to investigate the processes by which within the peculiar paths of Alewi modernization, Alawism separated from its traditional context and transformed into a modern sense of Alawism. Last of all, moving within the framework drawn in the first two sections, the third part of this study scrutinizes the perceptions of Ataturk amongst modern Alewis; the communal memory that produces these perceptions; the correspondences between these perceptions and lived experiences of Alewis during the time of Ataturk and other factors that contribute to the formation of Ataturk perceptions amongst Alewis.
