In this study, carried out between the dates June 2010 and July 2011 in the western Black Sea, the mesh selectivity parameters of monofilament and multifilament gill nets which have 17, 18 and 20 mm mesh size were calculated using the SELECT method. In addition, fishing composition, fish efficiency, commercial and discard rates of species, the dominant species on nets, diversity of species and the similarity index analysis were performed for each type of gillnets. A total of 3388 individuals (108276.98 g), consisting of fish and invertebrate species, were caught by monofilament and multifilament gillnets. There are totally 47 species caught in the two types of gill nets (36 osteichthyes, 9, crustacea and two types of Mollusca). The amount of catch was determined as 53.87 % and 46.13 % in terms of weight, for the monofilament and multifilament gill nets respectively, while the amount of the catch percentages of monofilament and multifilament gillnets, in terms of number, was determined as 50.03 and 49.97, respectively. Monofilament nets are 1.48 times more effective than multifilament nets for mullet fishing while the catching efficiency of both nets is found to be equal to each other for the scorpion fishing. In this work, the ratio of commercial catch to the total catch amount was found between 0.23 and 0.44 for monofilament gill nets and this rate was found between 0.29 and 0.40 in the case of multifilament gill nets. As a result of the calculations made, using by the SELECT method, the modal lengths of mullet were calculated as 14.26, 15.10, 16.78, 13.90, 14.72 and 16.36 cm, respectively, for 17, 18 and 20 mm mesh size of monofilament and multifilament nets. The calculated modal lengths of scorpion fish were determined as 9.77, 10.35, 11.50, 8.71, 9.22 and 10.25 cm, respectively.

Tekir balığı (Mullus surmuletus) avcılığında monofilament ağlar multifilament ağlardan 1,48 kat daha etkin iken, iskorpit balığı (Scorpaena porcus) avcılığında her iki ağ grubunun av verimi eşit bulunmuştur.
