Theoretical approaches to the novel as a literal fact which was developed after the period of Tanzimat constitutes the focus point of this thesis. The study displays the conceptual levels in which the novel was discussed, the efforts which defined the novel, the thoughts about its connections with both the traditional literary genres and the concept of reality, and the criteria which were developed for all these issues by using the texts attempting the determinative features of the novel and its definition in the Turkish literature, especially from the Republican period until today.Stemming from this point of departure, the thesis reveals the assumptions about the transformations of the novel genre basing on mutual effects or transivity between the traditional literary genres and the novel. Moreover, it deals with the debate on both the reflections of the literary facts which determined some trends in the Western literature on the Turkish novel and the searching for analytical methods by which the novel as an aesthetic fact can be investigated. The thesis, therefore, exposes historically how the theoretical accumulation and terminology about the analyses of the novel which had been settled in the contemporary literature world were developed.
