This study is based on the theory of identity and social identity theory which takes its roots from the perspectives of structural symbolic interactionism. Due the contributions of professionals to the society, their taking part in a group, especially in its center and decision-making stages is important for the development of groups and societies. Therefore the research question for this study is the position of the professionals in the groups. Two subgroups of Turkey, described as a collectivist country, were considered as the samples of this study. One of these subgroups is horizontal collectivist and the other is the vertical collectivist. The data were collected from a total of 615 participants, including 306 participants from the horizontally collectivist group and 309 participants from the vertical collectivist group. In this study, the group perception was examined in accordance with the assumptions of Social Identity Theory and the hypotheses about the position of the professional identity were tested. The relationship between the meta contrast ratio which is denoted as depersonalization rate and the position in the group as being in the center or periphery was scrutinized. The predicted moderators of the relationship between professionalism and ingroup position as entitativity, ingroup homogeneity, common bond group perception and common identity group perception were tested in two opposite group samples of this study. The two groups were compared in terms of entitativity, ingroup homogeneity, common bond group perception and common identity group perception and professionalism. In the horizontal collectivist subgroup, the hypothesis that the professionals would be at the center of the group was rejected for one dimension of depersonalization and supported for two dimensions of depersonalization. In the vertical collectivist subgroup, the hypothesis that the professionals would take place in the periphery of the group was rejected for one dimension of depersonalization but supported for two dimensions. In this study, it was found that the variance explained the position of professionalism within the group was low in two different groups compared. This situation contributed to the social identity in that its other assumptions are more explanatory in determining ingroup position. The study further contributed to the social identity theory since its quantitative data were supported by prior qualitative study, and the sample was made up of real groups of individuals.
