The Dardanelles and it immediate vicinity has been an area which had to be defended for many centuries because of its strategic location, and for this reason many defensive structures were built in this area during the course of history. This continued to be the case during the Ottoman Period and while new defensive structures were built, old ones continued to be used after being repaired. These structures were modeled based on the needs and the military technologies of the relevant period. Twelve castles and thirty-two redoubts were studies as a part of this research. These structures, which were studied, have a great importance in terms of reflecting the development of the Ottoman defensive architecture from the XIVth until the XIXth century at Çanakkale. The Ottoman period castles and redoubts were built facing one another especially in order to control the passage through the Dardanelles. The castles can be mainly grouped as castles which have a regular plan based on their external walls, ones which have an irregular plan that follow the topography and isolated examples based on their plans. It was observed that castle wall thicknesses and heights started to decrease with the XVth century with the changing weapon technology. On the other hand, architectural units in castles including masjids, bathhouses and fountains continued their existence.Redoubts, which were hidden underground, were started to be built starting with the second half of the XIXth century as castles started to become inadequate for the developing weapon technology. This type of redoubts, which continued to be built until the beginning of the XXth century, gave way to concrete bonnets with metal accessories after this point.Redoubts in Çanakkale are divided into two as coastal redoubts and land redoubts. These were either built out of soil or of stone. Out of thirty-two redoubts which we studied, only two were built out of soil and the rest were built of stone. Castles and redoubts were mostly not decorated as they were built mainly with functional and not with aesthetic concerns. It was mainly the sturdiness and the fire power of the castles that were signified in their designs. Keywords: Çanakkale, Ottoman, Defensive Structures, Castle, Redoubt.
