IntroductionPilonodial sinus, seen in sacrococcygeal region caused by the hair follicles in young adults, is a common disease that can negatively affect the patient's life. Various surgical methods as well as conservative approaches can be used for the treatment of this disease.AimIn this study it was aimed to assess the effect of morphological parameters of resected specimens in patients with pilonidal sinus disease on preferred surgical technique, retrospectively.MethodIn this study, the histo-pathologic reports of 595 patients were evaluated retrospectively. Patients with pilonodial sinus were operated on by various surgeons at Istanbul University Cerrahpasa Medical Faculty Department of General Surgery between 2007 and 2011.ResultsIn Limberg group the flap area and the distance of sinus opening to the nearest surgical margin was significantly higher than the other groups. (p<0,05). When each method was evaluated separately, it was found that the application rates of Karydakis and primary repair methods were significantly higher in female patients than males (p<0,001).ConclusionIt was observed that the area of removed specimen by the Limberg method was significantly larger than the other three methods. This method allows wider excision and provides more effective results. It was thought that the reasons of the higher rates of preference of the Karydakis and primary repair method in female patients than males are as follows: female patients are admitted to physicians and being diagnosed at early period and sufficient treatment with more limited resection can be achieved.
