Anomalous Monism, a leading position in philosophy of mind, is to be explored at length with this thesis in three main chapters the core of which is briefly outlined as follows: (1) Donald Davidson redescribes what is classically known as the problem of free will: (a) Mental events are causal in the sense that they cause, and are caused by, physical events. (b) All causal events are (strictly) nomic in the sense that event tokens related as cause and effect must instantiate a strict law. It then is natural to say that (a) and (b) jointly imply that mental events are nomic. (c) But all mental events, contrary to physical events, are anomic on account of which alone Davidson thinks human freedom is possible. Yet, the premise (c) in turn seemingly puts the premise (a) of causal efficacy of mental events in jeopardy. Notice, however, that to say that no mental events are nomic is to say that no mental events are nomic qua mental. And it does not follow simply from the fact that mental events are anomic qua mental, that mental events are anomic tout court. It is only if mental events are (identical with) physical events, that we could assert that mental events are nomic qua physical. (d) Hence, concludes Davidson, every event which is anomalous under its mental description could be given a physical description by means of which it could be subsumed under a strict law (Anomalous Monism). (2) However, Jaegwon Kim and some other philosophers point out that a mental event, on Davidson's view, is causal due, not to its being mental, that is, not to its mental property, but only to its physical property. Therefore, Anomalous Monism although allows mental events to be causally efficacious, yet fails to accord any direct role to mental properties in the causal network. (3) John Heil suggests a two-stage answer to the objection mentioned above. (i) Since Davidson is part of a nominalist tradition that rejects properties, the question whether events, for Davidson, are causally efficacious is as independent of whether we describe them in mental or physical vocabulary, as is whether we describe them in English or Spanish. (ii) A property realist reading of Anomalous Monism may not have to amount to property epiphenomenalism. Since predicates in a language does not correspond one-one with properties, it may well be possible that one and the same (particular) property, Heil argues, could satisfy both physical and mental predicates at once, without requiring the pair involved to be (nomologically) co-extensive with each other. Davidson is silent concerning deep nature of truthmakers of mental and physical predicates. So the principal conclusion of this essay will be that the ontological monism of Davidson's does not imply property epiphenomenalism, nor does it imply physicalism. Tezde, zihin felsefesinde önemli yer bulan anomal monizm üç ana bölümde etraflıca incelenecek ki özü, anahatlarıyla şöyledir: (1) Donald Davidson klasik özgür irade problemini yeniden ifadelendirir. (a) İnsan eylemleri dahil zihinsel olaylar, fiziksel olaylara neden ve sonuç olduklarından nedenseldirler. (b) Bütün nedensel olaylar, neden ve sonuç olarak ilişkilendirildiklerinde katı yasalar örneklediklerinden (katı) nomiktirler. Öyleyse (a) ve (b) beraber zihinsel olayların nomik olmasını gerektirir. Gelgelelim, (c) öncülü, sırasında, (a)'daki zihinsel olayların nedensel etkinliğini görünürde tehlikeye atar.
