M.S. Thesis Abstract FormName of the Student : Semra AĞRALIProgram of Study : Industrial EngineeringThesis Title : Modeling and Analysis of an Auction-Based LogisticsMarketAbstractIn this thesis, a logistics market that uses a reverse auction to match orders given byshippers that aim to transport their goods to various destinations with carriers is analyzed.Important performance measures for such a system are the average expected auctionprice, the average expected profit of carriers, the average number of orders and carriers, the probability of rejection of orders and carriers because of the capacity constraints andthe proportion of carriers that take an order. The objective of this thesis is to analyze theeffects of various system parameters, such as arrival and abandonment rates of orders andcarriers, and the capacity of the system for carriers and orders, on the performance of thesystem in a stochastic environment. In this market, called as logistics center, a shipperopens an auction using an electronic reverse auction platform. All the carriers available atthe logistics center at the time of the auction submit their bids for that order. Initially, inorder to give qualitative insights on the real system, a descriptive statistics is performedwith the actual data provided by the Eskisehir Chamber of Industry Guide LogisticsCenter. Then the system is modeled in two steps. First the auction is modeled in a staticsetting to determine the auction price and the profit of the carriers based on the number ofcarriers engaging in the auction and their cost distributions. Then a continuous timeMarkov chain model is developed to analyze the system in a dynamic setting withrandom arrivals and possible abandonment of orders and carriers. By combining thesetwo models, the performance of the system in steady state is evaluated. The maincontribution of this thesis is to propose an analytical model that evaluates theperformance of an auction-based logistics market in a dynamic setting. The model yieldsinsights regarding the effects of the system parameters on the performance. It is shownthat the average expected price is decreasing in the arrival rate of carriers and theabandonment rate of orders, and it is increasing in the arrival rate of orders and theabandonment rate of carriers. In addition, an estimation method is developed to find thecost distributions of the carriers from the observed bids. The proposed method is appliedon the real life case data, and the results are found to be promising.Advisor: Prof. Dr. Barış Tan Date:Director: Prof. Dr. Yaman Arkun Date:.
