Realistic mathematics education is an actual approach formed on mathematics education by Freudenthal Institute in Holland. The aim of this study is to find an answer to the question of whether the education given according to GME and traditional approach; `teaching the subject of sets in 9th grade` makes a significant difference on academic success of students. Sampling of the study includes 59 9th grade students, 30 of whom are experiment, and 29 of whom are control group in Hasan Basri Anadolu İmam Hatip High School in Erzurum. Initially, an equivalence test was carried out on students to determine whether there is a significant difference between experiment and control groups. After the equivalence test, a pre-test, including 20 questions, about the subject of sets was applied to both groups. After the application and activities, the same test was applied again to the same groups as end-test. A semi - constructed interview was applied to some of experiment group students to determine their views about GME approach and activity.The data obtained from pre and end tests was calculated with independent t-test and matched t-test with a 0,05 significance level. Analysis of data obtained from semi-constructed interviews was done through analyzing the classified content analysis of answers given with a frequency table of answers given to each question.According to results, it was found out that learning activities organized with GME approach were more effective in academic success of the students than learning activities with traditional approach.

Gerçekçi matematik eğitimi Hollanda'da Freudenthal Enstitüsü tarafından matematik eğitimi üzerine ortaya konulmuş güncel bir eğitim yaklaşımıdır. Bu çalışmanın amacı GME ve geleneksel yaklaşımına göre verilen eğitimin `9. sınıf kümeler konusu öğretimi` üzerinde öğrencilerin akademik başarılarında anlamlı fark gerçekleştirir mi sorusuna cevap bulmaktır. Araştırmanın çalışma grubu, Erzurum ili Merkez Yakutiye ilçesinde bulunan Hasan Basri Anadolu İmam Hatip Lisesi'nde okuyan 30 deney, 29 kontrol grubu olmak üzere toplam 59 dokuzuncu sınıf öğrencisinden oluşmaktadır. Öncelikle deney ve kontrol gruplarının genel matematik başarıları arasında anlamlı bir fark olup olmadığını ölçmek için bu iki gruba denklik testi yapılmıştır. Denklik testinin ardından kontrol ve deney gruplarına kümeler konusu bilgilerini ölçen 20 soruluk ön-test uygulanmıştır. Daha sonra aynı test, uygulama ve etkinliklerden sonra son-test olarak tekrar uygulanmıştır. Deney grubu öğrencilerinin bazılarına GME yaklaşımına ve etkinliklere yönelik görüşlerini tespit etmek amacıyla yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme uygulanmıştır.Ön ve son testlerden elde edilen veriler 0,05 anlamlılık düzeyinde bağımsız t-testi ve bağımlı t-testi ile analiz edilmiştir. Yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmelerden elde verilerin analizi ise verilen yanıtların içerik analizi ile çözümlenerek her bir soruya verilen yanıtların frekans tablosu oluşturulmasıyla gerçekleştirilmiştir.Sonuçlara göre GME yaklaşımı ile düzenlenen öğrenme etkinliklerinin, geleneksel yaklaşıma göre düzenlenen öğrenme etkinliklerine göre öğrenci akademik başarısında daha etkili olduğu görülmüştür.
