Özet:

Income distribution is a subject that many disciplines in social sciences study. Income distribution is effective in establishing peace and prosperity in society as well as being an economic indicator. The concept of urbanization is at least as old and important as income distribution. The relationship between these two concepts, which has become more important with the increase in the world population concentrated in cities, has an important place in the literature. In todays world where the population is increasing and resources are decreasing, the relationship between urbanization and income distribution is one of the important problems that cities face Climate change, migration, etc. in cities where natural resources are decreasing while the population is increasing. The negative effects brought by the developments increase the problems of the cities. For this reason, it is important to discuss the effects of income distribution on urban population. There are studies in the literature that examine the positive and negative effects of income distribution on urban population. Studies examining the relationship between urbanization and income distribution can cover a group of countries as well as a country specific. This study investigates the effect of urbanization on income distribution inequality in Turkey. The effects of the independent variables in the econometric model of the study, namely national income, urban population and trade openness, on the dependent variable, Gini coefficient, were investigated using the ARDL bounds test. In other words, the method of the study was to investigate the effects of the independent variables in the study on the Gini coefficient, a type of measurement related to income distribution inequality, using the ARDL bounds test. According to the empirical findings obtained in the study, while economic growth and trade openness do not have a statistically significant effect on income distribution, urban population growth increases the Gini coefficient, an indicator of income distribution inequality. As a result, it was concluded that the urbanization phenomenon further increases income distribution inequality for Turkey.
