Özet:

In the 1920s, the relations between the newly established Turkish and Soviet republics started to develop positively with Moscow hoping for Ankara to become its close ally. Kurdish rebellions in the Middle East, especially the Sheikh Said Rebellion in Turkey, put a dilemma before the Soviet leaders. While the Kremlin was inclined to support the Turkish authorities, it faced dissent from a transnational organisation it had established on Soviet soil the Communist International Comintern. The latter worked on promoting a Soviet-led global revolution in the East, and it saw the Kurds as an important partner in that endeavour. The paper shall analyse the disputes in Soviet policy towards the Turkey and Kurdish issues. In particular, it focuses on the case of a Soviet military officer turned Orientalist Kazimir Vasilevsky who used his position inside the Comintern to articulate its opposition to the official line towards Ankara. Vasilevsky insisted that only the Turkish Communist Party could help the Kurds and the Kurdish national movement deserved Soviet support. He also engaged in field research during an official mission to Turkey that coincided with the 1925 Sheikh Said uprising. The paper relies on publications of the time and archival records.

1920lerde yeni kurulan Türk ve Sovyet devletleri arasındaki ilişkiler, Moskovanın Ankaranın yakın müttefiki olmayı umut etmesiyle olumlu yönde gelişmeye başladı. Ortadoğudaki Kürt ayaklanmaları, özellikle Türkiyedeki Şeyh Said ayaklanması Sovyet liderlerinin önüne bir ikilem koydu.
