Özet:

Turkey has long been a country visited and written about by Japanese travelers, a tradition that continues to this day. Among these visitors is the renowned Japanese author Haruki Murakami, who visited Turkey twice, in 1981 and in 1988. Murakami travelled to Greece and then came to Turkey in 1988. He wrote about his trip in a book, titled Uten Enten. This study aims to analyze Murakamis portrayal of Turkey and the social structure of Turkish society in the late 1980s, as reflected in his travelogue. Murakami travelled to many regions in Turkey-from the West to the East, expressing a particular fondness fort he Black Sea Region, which he discussed in detail under the chapter titles Karadeniz Black Sea and Hopa. On the other hand, although Murakami liked the Aegean and Mediterranean Regions too, he did not write about them. In his book, he dwelt on the Eastern Anatolia Region. He described Eastern Anatolia as the worst place in Turkey. He also described Turkish society as being overly curious and lazy. Furthermore, he discussed Turkish peoples fondness for cigarettes in another chapter. He advised Japanese people to bring cigarettes with them when they went to Turkey. In his book, Murakami also covered political issues such as the Kurdish and Armenian issues, emphasizing that Turks tended to avoid talking about these issues.
