Özet:

Aim: This research was conducted to determine the frequency of unplanned pregnancies and their effects on body image. Method: The research was carried out as an analytical cross-sectional study between October 2019 and October 2020 in a public hospital. The study population consisted of pregnant women who visited the obstetrics out-patient clinic of the hospital for routine follow-up, whereas the sample consisted of 300 pregnant women. The data for the research were collected using The Pregnancy introductory Form and Body Perception Scale. With the SPSS 25 programme, analyses of data were performed using descriptive statistics, chi-square, Fishers Exact and student t test. Results: It was determined that 30 of the pregnant women were unplanned pregnancy. While the rates of unplanned pregnancy increased with increased number of living children, number of pregnancies and live births of the pregnant women participating in the study; having a previous unplanned pregnancy and using traditional methods of contraception increased the rate of unplanned pregnancy; and these incrememts were found to be significant in the statistical analysis p0.05. The mean score of the Body Perception Scale was 148.2423.92. It was found that those who conceived by planning were 148.5021.83 and those who got pregnant without planning were 147.6328.32, and it was found that unplanned pregnancy did not affect the body images of the pregnant women p0.775. Conclusions and Suggestions: It was found that a third of the pregnant women had unplanned pregnancies, their body image perceptions were moderate and that unplanned pregnancies did not affect the body images of the pregnant women in this study. It is recommended to provide training and consultancy services to couples on family planning and reproductive health, starting from the preconceptional period, and to review the existing services.
