Özet:

This article researches the leading Istanbul newspapers publication of fake news and comments on the liberation of Baku from the Bolsheviks, dated August 14 and 15, 1918. The main focus of the paper is to desipher how these news came about and under which conditions; and the manner they were reflected on the Istanbul newspapers. Through a comparative analysis of press reports, columns, and records in various archival documents, we determined the source of the misunderstanding, narrowing it down to the words of a respected Caucasian who traveled to Istanbul on August 13, 1918. His testimony was reflected as good news in the next days issues of Istanbul newspapers. Thus, based on the internal communications of the military apparatus, it was understood that the news published in the Istanbul newspapers were about the first attack on Baku on August 5, 1918. However, the failure of the attack was presented as a clear victory in the Istanbul newspapers. This mistake was directly related to the difficulty and limitations of communication with the Caucasus. Today, it is known that Baku was liberated on September 15, 1918. The impact and consequences of the newspaper report of August 14 and 15, 1918, show how important the Baku question was and how impatiently people waited for the liberation of the city.
