Özet:

After independence in 1991, Azerbaijan faced a political and economic crisis and was forced to war with Armenia over its claim to Nagorno-Karabakh. During this period, the political instability in the country extended the field of war and also delayed Azerbaijans integration in the global sphere. As a matter of fact, until the ceasefire agreement in 1994, Nagorno-Karabakh and its surrounding cities were occupied and Azerbaijan did not receive the necessary support from the international community. However, Türkiye was the first country to recognise Azerbaijan in 1991 and soon diplomatic relations were established. Turkey, which has been on Azerbaijans side politically and economically, has provided a significant support to the Baku government in resolving the Karabakh issue. This study analyses the first 10-year period in which the basis of Azerbaijan-Türkiye political relations was formed. The article draws attention to the fact that the political relations between the two countries, which were built on the Nagorno-Karabakh issue, evolved into the aim of integrating Azerbaijan in the international arena after the ceasefire agreement.
