Özet:

In the digital communication world, combating fake news is an important requirement due to the acceleration of information flow. Fake news can be defined as news texts intentionally prepared to manipulate the audiences thoughts on real events and expressions. Fact-checking websites play a major role in combating fake news. Fact-checking involves proving or disproving information that is suspected to be inaccurate using open sources and a systematic method. Teyit.org is one of the websites that perform fact-checking. The aim of this study is to identify the fake and fabricated news circulating on social media after the earthquakes that occurred in Kahramanmaraş on February 6, 2023. For this purpose, fake news related to the earthquake was examined on teyit.org website for two months between 06.02.023-06.04.2023. The examinations were conducted through descriptive content analysis, which is based on summarizing and interpreting the obtained data under predetermined themes. The findings obtained from the analyses were interpreted according to the categories created by Claire Wardle. As a result, it was determined that many fake and fabricated news were circulated on social media for different purposes knowingly or unknowingly from the first day of the earthquake.
