Özet:

Objective: The study aims to critically evaluate two separate editions of Mehmed b. Alis fl. 1691 work Tarjama-yi Jadīda fīl-Khawāṣṣ al-Mufrada, about which detailed information on the authors life is not available. Additionally, it seeks to identify the source text that served as the basis for the translation and to provide a new assessment of the work. Method: The research was conducted between March and October 2024. To identify any previously unknown copies of the work, the catalogs and databases of both domestic and international libraries were systematically searched. A comparative analysis of the text and plant illustrations was undertaken, incorporating newly identified copies and the book presumed to be the source of the translation. Additionally, the content of the work was examined within the context of its translation period. Findings: In addition to one manuscript and one lithographic copy previously known, an additional manuscript and three lithographic copies of the work were identified. It was determined that Herbario Novo, authored by the Italian botanist and physician Castore Durante d. 1590, served as the source for the translation. The headings describing the plants in both the source text and the translated work are closely aligned, and the illustrations of the plants are nearly identical. Conclusion: The original copy of the work authored by Mehmed b. Ali has not been identified, and significant discrepancies have been observed among the existing copies. In this regard, the current editions of the text are notably deficient, as they rely on a single copy. While the translator, who undertook the work for economic reasons, demonstrated awareness of contemporary knowledge on new diseases and practices, his primary objective was not to align his translation with recent medical advancements. Instead, his focus was on introducing plants available in Istanbul to discourage the procurement of such plants from foreign sources.
