Özet:

In this article, Türkiye-England relations in the period between 1929 and 1939 were analysed through their reflections in the Turkish press. In this period, the course of relations between the two countries was analysed through the news about England published in the newspaper Cumhuriyet. The sample of the study consisted of Cumhuriyet newspapers from the beginning of 1929 until September 2, 1939. The issues of Cumhuriyet were accessed from the digital archive of Istanbul University called A Look to History through Newspapers Project. In this archive, a framing analysis was conducted on 3603 issues of Cumhuriyet published in the said period. Within the scope of the study, the visibility rate of the news about England in the scanned newspapers, the attitude adopted towards England in these news articles and the compatibility of this attitude with the Turkish foreign policy of the period were questioned. In order to make a comparative evaluation, the news articles about Soviet Russia in the same newspapers were also analysed using the same criteria as those used for England. The findings determined that the editorial policy applied in Cumhuriyet in the news during the period analysed was generally in line with the Turkish foreign policy of the period, and that the changes in Turkish foreign policy towards England and Soviet Russia were often reflected in the editorial policy of the newspaper mostly simultaneously. Since no other study has been found that systematically examines Türkiyes relations with England through newspaper framing analysis or any other research method in the early Republican period, and particularly between 1929 and 1939, it is hoped that this study will contribute to filling a gap in the literature on the subject.
