Özet:

This article presents a cross-section of the espionage activities of a Levantine named Jean Chevrier who lived in Galata in the 18th century. Main sources of the study are an intelligence report written by him and submitted to the Austrian ambassador of the period and a diplomatic report of the French ambassador in Istanbul. Jean Chevrier was a member of a Genevan Protestant community in Constantinople who worked as a watchmaker. Over time, he became a part of Alexandre Bonnevals inner circle in Galata Humbaracı Ahmed Pasha. Probably this relationship paved the way for his important position in the embassy of the Kingdom of Naples in Istanbul. However, due to the collapse of his commercial activities, he had fallen into great debt and in exchange for money, he informed the Austrian ambassador Penkler about Bonneval Pashas anti-Austrian activities. This person, erroneously referred to as Chenier in Niyazi Berkes Modernization in Turkey, was the author of the report on the Rochefort project presented to Nevşehirli Damat İbrahim Pasha at the beginning of the Tulip Period. Captain Rochefort, a Protestant French officer, promised military and technical services to the Sublime Porte in exchange for the Huguenot community of which he was a member to be granted asylum in Ottoman lands. But the project was not realized due to the intervention of the French ambassador of the period. Although Chevriers report mentions this project in detail, it mainly deals with a new Protestant asylum attempt that seems to have been on the agenda in the year of 1745.
