Özet:

ABSTRACT The purpose of this article is to focus on the Library of Alexandria, which served as an extension of Ancient Greek thought in the East. The main emphasis of the article is to examine the historical position and significance of the Library of Alexandria in transmitting Ancient Greek thought and science. It explains the translation activities into Arabic and later into Latin by the Syriac and Nestorian heretical communities in the regions of Nisibis Edessa and Antioch of Eastern Rome, which served as the transmission channel of Ancient Greek thought. Through these translation activities, the journey and stops of the sources of rational awakening among societies and places are discussed. The analysis attempts to trace how texts related to natural philosophy, encompassing these disciplines, reached the Beytül Hikme in Baghdad, the most advanced center of intellect in the Islamic world in the 9th and 10th centuries, starting from Alexandria through translation activities. Despite the rich literature on the Library of Alexandria, this literature has taken on a structure intertwined with myths and truths. Therefore, in this article, a discussion of the literature and the theses put forward in this regard is conducted within a comparative method and a historical perspective. It is argued by presenting evidence that there are many narratives in Western literature woven with myths regarding the burning of the library by Muslims, which are baseless. Although it was proven in the 19th century that the claim that the Library of Alexandria was burned by Muslims is baseless, this myth has been repeated in many texts in the past century. The bias of Islamic phobia in the West, which has infiltrated scientific literature, is reiterated in many Western sources as a rumor. Therefore, this article also contains a response aimed at proving that such claims are baseless.
