Özet:

This study examines the early modern philosopher Mary Astells understanding of the individual, society and power in the light of her life, her corpus and studies about the philosopher. Thus, it is aimed to reveal the significance and legacy of Astell, who is called the first English feminist, in the history of political thought. For this purpose, the social and political structure of 17th and 18th century England was analyzed based on the important turning points in Astells life and its reflections on Astells thought were evaluated. The philosophers handling of conflicting views, such as her devotion to the Church and her defense of conservatism, and her presentation of the first arguments of feminism, is seen as the main point that makes her philosophy unique. At this point, it can be stated that there are three issues that stand out in Astells analysis of political power. Two of them are the ideas of persona ficta fictive person and contractualism, which have been on the rise with modernization. The third is the appearance that traditional patriarchy, which is transferred to these two modern concepts, takes with modernization. In this context, Astell challenges liberalism by showing how the marriage contract creates a relationship of domination for women, based on the common belief of her time, the analogy between the marriage contract and the social contract.
