Özet:

This study presents an evaluation of İsmet Özels book titled A Guide to Reading Poetry, first published in 1980, within the context of objections and proposals. The topic is limited to specific points such as the essence of the poem chosen to represent Özels poetics, the poetry environment, traditionalism, and progressivism. The part of the study focusing on the essence of poetry constitutes the first section. Here, the problems find their source in the value attributed to them by poetry, while their remedy lies in the responsibility that this value imposes on the poet. The second section relates to the anticipated poetry environment. Özel offers some proposals regarding the responsibilities of poets to clarify this environment and lists his objections to the distortions in the literary environment. In the context of traditionalism and progressivism, which is the last subject of the study, the effectiveness of these concepts in human existence is examined. Traditionalists have become destabilized due to their unconditional adherence to the values and institutions of the past, while progressivists have missed out on the present by pursuing values to be obtained in the future. According to Özel, poetry is the only way to express existence and to remind humanity of the connection between the past and the future. This study also includes points where these three issues intersect with poet testimonies and some important issues in our poetry history.
